Opponents of a new regional headquarters for Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains have fired their first salvo.
A mysterious group called KeepPeaceInStapleton.com is distributing an inflammatory brochure in the neighborhood near 38th Avenue and Pontiac Street, where Planned Parenthood will rehab and expand an existing building into a clinical and administrative facility that will cover a city block.
The brochure levels charges of racism, pornography, child sexual exploitation and murder at Planned Parenthood. The brochure asks readers to call the general contractor for the new headquarters, as well as Denver City Council President Michael Hancock, who represents the area.
A trip to the group’s website offers no acknowledgment of who is behind the effort to smear Planned Parenthood, which, of course, does not do the things the brochure accuses. The website gives no way to contact the organization other than by email.
Anti-abortion groups around the country have used a similar strategy trying to stop construction of Planned Parenthood facilities, which provide family planning services, birth control and abortions for women who choose them.
Land for the Denver facility is already properly purchased and zoned. So legal efforts to stop it likely don’t exist.

Colorado ranked second in the nation in the increased number of Hispanic students attending all-minority schools, according to a Pew Hispanic Center report released Thursday.

Ten percent of Colorado Latinos attended an all-minority school in 2005-06, compared with a negligible percentage in 1993-94, the Pew report said.

As a group, black students in Colorado ranked eighth in re-segregation, going from attending virtually no all-minority schools in 1993-94 to one in 10 attending an all-minority school in 2005-06, the Pew report said.

Roughly 71 percent of Colorado public school children attend schools that are majority white, but statewide, the percentage of students going to all-white schools is now negligible, according to the nationwide Pew study of racial and ethnic components of schools.

Colorado mirrored the national trend of better integrated schools for whites over the past 14 years. However, as more whites went to school with minorities, more minorities, especially Latinos and African-Americans, found themselves in growing isolation.

Pew says a massive influx of Hispanic students into America’s public schools explains the seeming contradiction in integration.

In 1993-94 Latinos made up roughly one in eight public school students in the U.S., the Pew report found. By the 2005-2006 school year, they made up roughly one in five students.

The Hispanic increase drove down whites as an overall percentage of public school students nationwide. That meant a greater percentage of whites went to school with minorities. But it also meant that Latino and African-American students simultaneously became more isolated in certain areas.

Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar’s thoughts about Alberto Gonzales’ demise were brief.

“I had called for Alberto Gonzales’ resignation several months ago,” Salazar said in a statement released hours after Gonzales resigned Monday as U.S. Attorney General.

“With his resignation today, I am hopeful that the American people can have their confidence restored in the Department of Justice. This is an opportunity for a fresh start and I look forward to the President bringing new leadership to a department that has become overly politicized.”

That’s a great sentiment, but it neglects the major role Salazar played in getting Gonzales the job he so badly bungled.

Salazar introduced Gonzales in the Senate. Salazar supported Gonzales throughout the vetting process of confirmation hearings. Salazar voted for Gonzales.

Monday, the senator didn’t bother to mention that. He failed to own up to his part in this mess. It wasn’t just that Gonzales appeared to lie before Congress about what he knew of overzealous White House intelligence operations and other dirty tricks. It was that Gonzales’ penchant for politics was undeniable all along.

He was a Bushie from jump street.

Surely, the senator didn’t miss Gonzales’ right wing credentials and ideological intransigence. Those, as much as the lies, eventually cost Gonzales his job.

One wonders if Salazar was so anxious to see a Latino in a cabinet level position that he ignored Gonzales’ loyalty to the Bush Administration instead of the law.

Metro State College of Denver has backed partly away from a decision to charge out-of-state tuition to Colorado residents and U.S. citizens whose parents are illegal immigrants.

In an email Thursday afternoon, Metro announced that college president Stephen Jordan had told administrators to provisionally admit resident-citizens under an in-state tuition plan that would change only if Colorado Attorney General John Suthers rules that those students must be charged an out-of-state rate.

Suthers’ decision is expected before school starts for the fall semester, Jordan said.
“Much attention has been paid recently to Metro State’s implementation of state law, which we understood to require the College to charge out-of-state tuition to applicants whose parents can not prove that they are lawfully present in the United States, even if the applicant is a U.S. citizen by birth, has lived in Colorado, and has graduated from a Colorado high school,” Jordan told administrators in an earlier email. “I have received many questions both internally and externally asking for background on our implementation of this policy and want to offer further clarification.”

Jordan said he wasn’t aware that some other state colleges, including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado State University and the state’s 13 community colleges, were charging in-state tuition to Colorado residents and U.S. citizens regardless of their parents’ legal status.

When Jordan learned of the discrepancy, he surveyed other schools and discovered that Mesa State, Adams State and Western State colleges, as well as the University of Colorado at Denver, interpreted a new law the same way his school did.

That law was supposed to deny state benefits to illegal immigrants. Combined with a “domicile” requirement for the parents of in-state students spelled out in another law, Metro and some others took that to mean that students under 23 whose parents were undocumented could not receive in-state tuition.

If the attorney general agrees with that interpretation, Metro will raise the tuition on provisionally admitted resident-citizens, a move that would hike their tuition from $3,000 to $11,000 per year.

At the same time, Jordan committed to work to change the law to “what it should be.” That would be in-state tuition for all resident-citizens, regardless of their parents’ legal status.

Score one for the lovable yellow giant against the curmudgeon from Colorado Springs. Congressman Doug Lamborn’s ridiculous bill to pull federal funding for public television got exactly what it deserved in a House of Representatives vote. It got crushed like a bug. If taking Sesame Street from children is Doug Lamborn’s idea of constituent service, there is little wonder that the once solidly Republican seat he fills is in danger of being taken by the Democrats. Retiring incumbent Joel Hefley was right not to endorse Lamborn in 2006. Lamborn is not only a closed-minded extremist in his political views, he’s now shown himself to be mean-spirited. If I were running against him in 2008, I’d have someone dressed as Big Bird shadow him on the campaign trail to remind voters how he tried to dismantle one of the most important sources of information and education available to the American public. Maybe Bert and Ernie can tag along.
