I see no difference between free health care for the Senators and Representatives and free health care for the able-bodied unemployed who have chosen not to work. They are both on the public take at the expense of the taxpayers.

Why then should the children of the working poor who help pay the taxes not have health insurance? Since we reward sloth we should also reward hard work.
How we treat children, the elderly, the disabled is the true mark of a country.

This SCHIP debate is one of those occasions where the truth must be separated from the rhetoric. There is nothing in the measure that creates a federal bureaucracy or federalizes health care in any way. Of course, Musgrave, Trancredo, and Lamborn come from the "don't confuse me with facts, my ideology is made up" school of political behavior. These three never had demonstrated any ability to think for themselves and routinely march in lock-step with the Bush White House (the departure of Karl Rove almost made them mute.)

Let them vote to kill the program (uphold their president's veto) if they wish. Then, let their opponents tag them with that one and see if their constituents are as uncaring as they are.

Rather than support poor kids health care, corn growers making record profits will receive 10.5 billion in federal subsidies over the next five years. It's as if Bush thinks, "Let SCHIP kids eat cornbread."

Jim, Yes, President Bush has made some errors in seven years. Vetoing this Bill however, is not one of them. The concept here is very much to his liking, but the Dems have made this a custom-made bill for their own benefit.
It's very sad, and definitely should be a non-particent effort, but keep in mind, we're in a very, very outrageous election period. The proverbial has yet to hit the fan, but I assure you, it will.
If this Bill if for the kids, let's do it right, not fast.

We're speniding billions in Iraq, but we can't provide health care for children. More of this administration's misplaced "priorities".

Jim in Aurora, do you think you could try going a sentence or two beyond the rhetoric and provide some substance in your response? Who knows, you might even have something meaningful to say, although based on your reply above, it is doubtful. I won't ridicule your spelling, prefering to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your typing was poor.

I find it fascinating that members of Congress are counting on their very generous, lifetime government paid health care plan, yet believe government paid, or assisted health care benefits for citizens who are unable to afford it is a bad idea.

Jim, your editorial is right on, IMO. Hopefully those Congressfolk of both parties who voted against overriding the veto will be thrown from office in 2008 (or whenever they are again up for election). And I hope the pro-SCHIP people don't capitulate now to Bush's rhetoric and offers to compromise. SCHIP is a straightforward issue, one that even the Democrats might not be able to blow.
