Better to leave well enough alone.
Given the atmosphere surrounding McSwane’s decision to publish an editorial in the Rocky Mountain Collegian with the headline “Taser This. F*** Bush,” the 20-year-old junior could not have gotten a better decision from the Board of Student Communications.
The board could have taken McSwane’s job. McSwane not only kept his job, he didn’t even get suspended from it. Instead, on Thursday night, he got a reminder to watch his step and a statement that his actions in printing an editorial with the F-bomb violated student publication policy and was “unethical and unprofessional.” After a four-hour private meeting with the BSC committee of six students and three faculty, the student editor was “admonished” and encouraged to modify his behavior.
The relative lack of sanction doubtless will qualify as an outrage to the college Republicans who wanted McSwane’s job for demeaning the Republican president. The BSC decision also should make for excellent fodder on right wing talk radio. The website of McSwane’s own publication filled with a mixture of relief and righteous indignation at the news of his slap on the wrist.
“There is no free speech issue here,” wrote a person who identified himself only as Brian. “Simply a selfish kid who wanted attention, and in an effort to get it compromised the finances of the paper and possibly the school.”
That was the yin.
Todd Klatt provided the yang on the Collegian website:
“By allowing him to keep his job the Collegian has not bowed to the pressure of a few offended people nor have they traded their free press rights for advertising dollars. A newspaper should never allow their advertisers or the public to dictate their content or their editorial policy.
“That being stated, I hope that McSwane will make wiser decisions that are worthy of a college educated journalist.”
Though he wasn’t talking Thursday night or Friday morning, I hope McSwane got the message. We’ll know soon enough. He has 20 days to appeal the BSC decision. If he does, he deserves the contempt aimed at him.
Even if he doesn’t appeal, his reaction to the BSC decision in an interview given to his newspaper was a little troubling.
“I think that they (the BSC) made the best decision they could have in their situation,” McSwane was quoted as saying. “They know that they need to uphold the First Amendment and what it means to students. They also have to save face in this media circus.”
If McSwane has not yet figured out that he created the media circus, he has not learned from his mistake.
When I spoke to him at a public meeting last week, McSwane seemed stunned at the anger and sorry for the loss of advertising dollars and staff pay cuts that accompanied his decision to run the editorial headline.
Even McSwane suggested that the staff, knowing what it knows now, might have done things differently. With his fate determined, he and his staff need to adjust their thinking. That doesn’t mean censorship. But it does mean finding the free speech that makes your point.
This editorial and it’s purposely offensive headline was supposed to call attention to the tasering of a University of Florida student who wouldn’t give up the microphone during a question-and-answer session with U.S. Sen. John Kerry. It was supposed to be about free speech on campus and everywhere else.
Instead, it became a personal inquisition against and about Dave McSwane.
He survived.
Now, it’s up to him to grow.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYou basically said it all, Jim. What’s intriguing is that so many, mostly on the right, can rise to such a high level of outrage over the actions of an immature kid. Perhaps he should be punished to having his mouth washed out with soap - right after VP Cheney has his similarly cleansed for his comments to Senator Leahy a few years ago. I don’t recall seeing much indignation from the right then; it was the left’s turn to be outraged. Fun and games. That so many can spend so much time on this issue is proof that it’s easier to devoting comparable time to real issues.
Jim, I think you’re getting too old. I’ve got at least 20 years on you, and I get it; you don’t. “Progressive” means you’re progress, not REgress. If anything this IS about freedom of speech. I think this what McSwayne was trying to demonstrate, but you missed the lesson. Maybe you’re offended because you were never allowed to write this in your columns about Bush, but wanted to?
The incident, whether intended by McSwayne or not, was to prove the point, that simply speaking the truth, but using a smutty word we all use (come on Jim you’re not a virgin), people focus on the word, not the message. It’s like people with the word on a tee shirt being banned from flying or even something anti-Bush. If someone was wearing a pro-Bush, “kill’em all in Iraq” tee shirt - no problem. What does this say about “who” are the squeaky wheels. We expect the young Republicans to demand McSwayne’s termination or anyone who speaks about their false gods, but we expect the progressives to stand up for the constitutional rights that Dennis claims we cherry pick. Are you trying to make his point?
Let’s see if I have the same rights as
Shane McDuff or whatever his name is
Ok, for the purposes of illustration:
FUCK YOU KEITH! Ok. Just so everyone
knows *I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST KEITH*
My question is what is PURPOSE of the
fowl language? Is serves NO PURPOSE
except to lower the tone and intelligence
level of the discussion. It adds nothing
except makes ME look like a dumb jerk.
Doesn’t it make more sense to have an
open intellectual debate on ANY TOPIC.
People who RESORT to fowl language don’t
have much of an argument.
Now, as a newspaper editor, are you telling
me, everyone of them doesn’t EDIT the
content of a letter to the editor?
Can I use the work NIGGER in a letter
What if I called Hillary Clinton a stupid
slimy CUNT?
OH, I see. There IS a line of good taste.
I think the editor should have been fired
for crossing that line. Editors edit for
good taste and sense. Right?
This became a first Amendment issue because
it was directed at the President.
I lied- I have ONE thing against Keith:
He’s a cherry picking Liberal. But I
still love em.
LHKMAN,
I must say that I laughed when Cheney told Leahy to F off….and you are right the left was outraged and the right didn’t care. Tables turned and the opposite is true. It’s hard to keep up with all of the hypocrisy…
Then again, this kid did it in print which makes it a bigger deal. I’m sure that he learned his lesson and this will be another chapter in the book that is his life. We all do things that when we look back think that maybe we would have done differently. I imagine this will be one of those times for this lad. It’s seriously time to move on.
Jim,
I found this assertion of journalistic
integrity laughable…

OH PLEEEESE!!!
If you don’t think big money, big advertisers
and special interests influence content
you DID just fall off the turnip truck!!!
Dennis,
I 100% agree with you that FOWL language is for chickens….
Dennis: McSwane used the FOUL word as a verb.(and perhaps intended an adjective).
You used two FOUL words ( N & C) as nouns, that is personal denigration.
The last I heard a fowl was a member of the bird family.
WHAT DID I TELL YOU?????
Right out of the LIBERAL HANDBOOK!!!
1) If you can’t win the argument change
the question.
2) If you can’t change question answer
a different question
3) If that doesn’t work criticize the
Grammer, usage or spelling!
I wasn’t kidding! That is the lame
and transparent “debating tactics” these
LIBERALS use. THEY NEVER TAKE RESPONSIBIL_
ITY or DEBATE THE ISSUE I REST MY CASE!
Spelling has never been my fort, it’s
memory work, I’m a free, independant
thinker. I’ll leave the memorization
of things to you Wildflower in you’re
purple haze. As for your defense
of this punk up in Fort Collins was it,
he should have been canned for showing
very poor judgement. That’s my point.
By the way Wildflower, I also used the F
word (as a verb)
Dennis…it was a joke. Man you are wound up tight…
Of course it was a joke noidea, but
it was also a diversion and a tried
and true Liberal debating tactic.
Change the question, change the issue
and of course, make a joke out of it,
“Wash his mouth out with soap”
Another debating tactic is selective
outrage. they’re all transparent.
Tell me, what is it that “winds up”
Liberals? Not being “In control”
mostly. Let’s see how humerous you
are the next time something pisses
you off.
It is interesting how dennis hammond uses “liberal” as an epithet. I don’t see liberals use “conservative” as an epithet.
Besides, when you get down to it, “conservative” means someone who is interested in money and power, and “liberal” means someone who is interested in people.
Where is the invective in that?
Not true, Conservatives want people to be
independant and self reliant, not beholden
to the power elite and Government. They want
them to be educated and employed not welfare
recipiants.
Conservatives want people to be self-
sufficient not helpless.
Liberal’s stock and trade is creating
constituants who are helpless and dependant
and who feel entitled. This empowers the
elite and creates the need for more
government, keeps the Liberal elite in Power.
Liberals do a disservice to peole. A good
example is Bill and Hillary Clinton. You
think they care about people? Give me a
break. So tell me, who cares MORE about
people, Conservatives or Liberals? I say
Conservatives.
oh yeah…courtesy of Jim Spencer…apologist for the REAL Xenophobic non accepting, no free speech, no worker rights, labor exploiting, racist, bigoted, class partitioned REPUBLIC OF MEXICO>>>>>>>>>> Not the USA, which is the accepting, free speech, labor protected, Immigrant accepting (contrary to Jim), non racist, free market economy that we enjoy……..
Move to Mexico and enjoy your life.
Guys,
The F-bomb may have been printed in the CSU student paper. But I am not going to let it be printed in the comments section on this website. If I see it, the comment gets nuked. You guys are smart and articulate enough to make your points and show your passion without resorting to profanity.
noidea. What the hell are you talking
about? Really, I mean huh?
Ah Yeah,*%^$! and So is the CSU student
newpaper, capable of dignified public
discourse, on it’s editorial page!(or
should be held to some journalistic
standard) Jim Spencer
understands the value of sensible, adult,
public debate. This incident (the F bomb)
has been just another example of the
childishness often exhibited by the Left
when they don’t get their way. A tantrum.
This punk editor shouldn’t be cannonized
like some civil rights leader. I saw his
face on the front of Westword, big deal.
dennis said, “It (foul language) adds nothing except makes ME look like a dumb jerk.” Trust me dennis, you don’t need the foul language to look that way. (sorry for using the j-word).
Why is it when a progressive uses the F-bomb it’s outrage and righties demand they be fired, but when a righty like Cheney with, OK, kind of high placed position uses it, it’s OK and hilarious? Hmmmmm. “CONFLICTED” remember that term about righties.
Well Jim is the moderator of this comments section but I still see dennis’s F, C, and, N-words still hanging there. I guess the software can’t filter it, and Jim isn’t living up to his promise.
Actually dennis foul words don’t offend me; just dennis does. Don’t you love it when righties listen and call in to left-wing radio shows, or get on progressive comments section to spread their bile. They think they’re harassing “us” but in reality, they just prove our points. Thanks dennis, we do care.
What fun would it be without me? You
know Socrates used to argue both sides
just for fun. I think Cheney is part of
an international conspiracy I’m reading
a book called Earth’s Next Fifty years
by Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. It involves
Cheney’s connection with BAE a British
Military Mega Corporation. Cheney made
himself look like a jerk using bad language
I agree that we have bigger fish to fry
than curse words. I’ll get back to you
on Cheney.
By the way Keith,
I’m the teacher pet that’s why my cursing
is allowed in the blog.
